Beached dolphin washes away before UNCW could perform necropsy

HOLDEN BEACH, NC (WWAY) — A necropsy was unable to be performed Wednesday after the tides washed away a beached dolphin carcass in Holden Beach.

Ann Pabst with UNCW says they were notified about it. Since the bottlenose dolphin was not alive and the call came in late Tuesday, they waited until Wednesday morning before deciding whether or not they would head down to the coast.

A Holden Beach Police officer told the university that the animal was no longer on the beach as of early Wednesday.

Pabst says it may show up on another part of the beach.

If so, you are asked to contact the UNCW Marine Mammal Stranding Program.
