Beachgoers pack North Topsail Beach on Fourth of July as officials warn of dangerous swimming conditions

NORTH TOPSAIL, NC (WWAY)– Hundreds of people gathered along the shoreline at North Topsail Beach in Pender County on the Fourth of July, taking advantage of clear skies and warm holiday weather.

While many visitors were focused on enjoying the holiday, local officials and residents are continuing to warn about a steep offshore sandbar that can drop as much as 30 feet in some areas, creating potentially dangerous swimming conditions.

Despite posted warning signs, advisories, and several water rescues reported in recent weeks, some beachgoers are still entering the water. Local resident Jeff Wells says the risk is ongoing, and he believes many visitors are unaware of the conditions.

“We are trying to inform and warn people and let them know that unfortunately it’s not a safe place to be swimming. We have hundreds of people swimming,” Wells said.

Wells emphasized that his goal is not to discourage visitors, but to encourage awareness of the hazards and promote safer beach activity.

He also spoke with beachgoers, including one resident who said the warning was concerning given the number of families present.

“I have a little girl, with a bunch of kids here, and now that you say that it’s concerning. Just trying to enjoy our time at the beach safely.”

Wells said most locals avoid swimming in the area due to the conditions but noted that many tourists may not be aware of the risks when they enter the water.
