BHI broadband bond referendum fails on tied vote

BALD HEAD ISLAND, NC (WWAY) — A tie vote means that an effort to bring broadband Internet access to Bald Head Island has failed.

Brunswick County Elections Director Sara Knotts says the vote count for the bond referendum on last week’s ballot remained deadlocked 81-81 after the Board of Elections did a discretionary recount during its vote canvass today.

The referendum asked voters in the Village of Bald Head Island to decide whether to authorize $10 million in bonds to build a broadband system that would have increased Internet access speed on the island.

Knotts says the village can decide whether to bring the issue back to the ballot again next year.
