Black History Month Art Contest kicks off in Wilmington

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Kids at the Brigade Boys & Girls Club have been hard at work on some artistic representations of their favorite African-American leaders in anticipation of Black History Month.

The art is for a contest sponsored by U.S Cellular.

The community will get to vote on their favorite pictures at U.S. Cellular locations here in Wilmington.

Latara Walker, 11, chose Rosa Parks, because she says she is inspired by how Parks stood up to bullies for what she believed in.

“Sometimes I wish Rosa Parks was here with me,” Latara said. “I don’t like people bullying each other, because it’s not fair.”

Organizers say this is a great way for kids to explore positive role models.

Voting for the contest ends Feb. 29 at U.S. Cellular stores. Winners will be announced in March, with first place getting a $250 gift card.
