Black History Month: Celebrating Frederick Douglass
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY)- Amanda Fitzpatrick sat down with Headmaster of Douglass Academy Nikki Chaney to talk about the impact of Frederick Douglas and his legacy that he left behind.
Frederick Douglass is the namesake of Douglass Academy Charter School and as such, we have a big celebration on his birthday. Frederick Douglass represents the power that education has on a person’s life.
Douglass was a slave who learned the alphabet and then was able to teach himself how to read. He shared this gift with other slaves and eventually was able to break free from his bondage. He then dedicated his life to the abolition of slavery.
