Bladen Co. Sheriff’s Office investigating deadly shooting in Clarkton


CLARKTON, NC (WWAY) — The Bladen County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a deadly shooting in Clarkton.

Sheriff James A. McVicker said in a release that the shooting happened in the parking lot at Oakdale Homes just after 6 p.m. Wednesday.

McVicker said a preliminary investigation revealed that a group of people got in a fight. During that altercation, the sheriff said a weapon was discharged, hitting Lonnie Level Smith, 38, of Clarkton.

Smith was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to the sheriff.

McVicker said investigators are interviewing a person of interest in the case and have identified several people involved in the incident. He said investigators will be following up on leads.

No word on what caused the fight.
