Boating safety reminders ahead of warm weekend and spring weather
WILMINGTON, N.C. (WWAY) — With warmer temperatures and sunny weather ahead, more boaters are expected on area waterways over the next few days.
Chris Juall, a safety specialist with The Qualified Captain, said preparation before heading out is critical to avoiding problems on the water.
Juall recommends checking your boat’s battery and inspecting the bilge, the lower area inside the hull, to make sure there are no leaks or mechanical issues. He also advises testing navigation lights and ensuring all required safety equipment — such as life jackets and fire extinguishers — are onboard and working.
In addition to the vessel itself, Juall said boaters should take time to inspect their trailers before traveling. That includes making sure tires are properly inflated, checking for signs of dry rot, confirming trailer lights are functioning and greasing wheel bearings to prevent breakdowns.
Juall said many common boating issues at the start of the season stem from equipment that has been sitting unused for months, making thorough inspections especially important.
Boaters can also consider taking a safety course to better understand navigation rules, emergency procedures and safe boating practices.
