Body cameras coming to New Hanover County?
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The New Hanover County Commission approved a grant request for the Sheriff’s office to outfit their deputies with body cameras.
The request comes amid a nationwide surge in interest in the cameras, after events that unfolded in Ferguson, MO and New York City, NY. The grant would buy 66 body cameras for deputies.
“Nothing speaks better than video. Video, a picture tells a thousand words as they say, so we hope that this happens and we hope that over time we can equip all of our officers that are out there with cameras,” said Woody White, a New Hanover County Commissioner.
White says he feels the public would respond positively to the cameras because he says they protect everyone involved. At the moment there isn’t a timeline in place on when they would be in use.
