Bomb threat prompts evacuation at Surf City Pier

SURF CITY, NC (WWAY) — Authorities responded to a reported bomb threat at the Surf City Pier on Wednesday evening, prompting the evacuation of patrons and a large emergency response.
According to the Town of Surf City, the threat was reported at approximately 8 p.m. at the pier, located at 112 S. Shore Drive.
Officials said patrons were immediately evacuated and moved to a safe location.
The Surf City Police Department, Surf City Fire Department, Surf City Emergency Management and mutual aid agencies responded to secure the area and ensure public safety.
Officials said the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation Bomb Squad were called to assist in assessing the threat.
As of Wednesday night at 10:15 p.m., the investigation remained ongoing.
Authorities have not released additional details about the nature of the threat.
