Brunswick Co. students practice STEM skills at Science Olympiad Invitational

BOLIVIA, NC (WWAY) — Some students in Brunswick County spent their Saturday practicing their STEM skills at Brunswick County Academy.

It was part of the first ever Brunswick County Schools Science Olympiad Invitational Tournament.

120 students from North, South, and West Brunswick High Schools and Brunswick Early College High School were on hand to show off their smarts.

Although it’s called “Science Olympiad,” an organizer, Jamie Smith, says any student can get involved, even if they don’t love that specific subject.

“It’s really great. We have kids that are in the top of the class and that are excited about science and want to be scientists. Then we have kids that don’t want to be scientists but really love computers and so they’re doing arduinos and building a circuit board. It’s really a great mix of kids,” said Smith, who is an instructional coach with Brunswick County Schools.

The Brunswick County STEM Council put this event on to prepare the students for the regional Science Olympiad at UNCW in March.
