Brunswick County Botanical Garden opens new “Story Walk”

BOLIVIA, N.C. (WWAY-TV) — Visitors to the Brunswick County Botanical Garden can now enjoy a new outdoor reading experience through the garden’s Story Walk program.

The self-guided exhibit displays pages from a children’s book along a walking path, allowing visitors to read the story as they explore the garden. Volunteers select two new books each year for the display.

This year’s featured book is A Rose Named Peace, which highlights a lesser-known piece of World War II history.

Linda Swanson, one of the volunteers who helped create the trail, said the story teaches visitors about how flower nurseries adapted during the war effort.

“The nurseries that were growing roses and other flowers during the war got rid of all their flowers and went to food to feed the troops, to feed the people in the occupied areas, and they wouldn’t talk about that in school, but it’s something that you will learn here,” Swanson said.

The Story Walk is available through July 7 at the Brunswick County Government Complex, where the botanical garden is located.
