Brunswick County family mourns after teen drowns in Shallotte River

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A Brunswick County family is mourning after investigators found the body of a 17-year-old high school student yesterday in the Shallotte River. Detectives say his death appears to have been an accident.

A spokeswoman for the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office says they received a call just before noon yesterday of a report of a missing person who may have fallen off of a private dock in the Shell Pointe community. The Sheriff’s Office helicopter spotted the body a couple hours later.

Investigators identified the body as Silas Oller, 17, of Sunset Beach.

His family says Silas loved music and enjoyed playing instruments including the guitar. Silas was a sophomore at West Brunswick High School, where he also played with the jazz band.

His mother says this is a very difficult time for their family, and that right now they need help paying for their son’s funeral arrangements.

Investigators say at this point the drowning appears to be accidental, but they are waiting for results of an autopsy.
