BOLIVIA, NC (WWAY) — Brunswick County Schools will once again provide free summer meals for children 18 and younger, with expanded options designed to give families greater flexibility during the school break.

The program will run from June 1 through Aug. 14 and, for the first time, will include both traditional eat-in meals at school sites and Summer Nutrition (SUN) Meals To-Go boxes available for pickup across the county.

“Brunswick County Schools is committed to supporting students and families beyond the school year,” said Imer Smith, director of child nutrition. “The addition of SUN Meals To-Go this summer gives families more flexibility to ensure their children have access to nutritious meals throughout the break.”

Families participating in the SUN Meals To-Go program may choose between a seven-day meal box or a three-day meal box. Seven-day meal boxes will be available for pickup every Monday from 1 to 3 p.m. at South Brunswick High School in Southport, Town Creek Middle School in Winnabow and West Brunswick High School in Shallotte. Three-day meal boxes will be distributed at those same locations every Thursday from 1 to 3 p.m.

School officials said families may not participate in both programs in a way that duplicates meals. Children who attend eat-in meal sites Monday through Thursday must select the three-day SUN Meals To-Go option.

Eat-in meals will be served at several schools throughout Brunswick County, with breakfast and lunch times varying by location. North Brunswick High School in Leland, South Brunswick High School and West Brunswick High School will serve breakfast and lunch.

Belville Elementary School in Leland, Jessie Mae Monroe Elementary in Ash and Town Creek Middle School will provide breakfast from 8:45 to 9:30 a.m. and lunch from 11:15 a.m. to 1 p.m. Lincoln Elementary School in Leland will offer breakfast from 9 to 9:30 a.m. and lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Additional meal sites will operate for a shorter period this summer. Town Creek Elementary in Winnabow, Union Elementary in Shallotte and Virginia Williamson Elementary in Bolivia will offer eat-in meals from June 5 through June 30, serving breakfast from 8 to 9 a.m. and lunch from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The summer meal program is intended to help ensure children continue to have reliable access to nutritious meals while school is out of session and families navigate the summer months.
