Brunswick Town Chapter seeks student entries for American History Essay Contest
SUPPLY, NC (WWAY) — Local middle school students are being encouraged to put their knowledge of American history to the test through the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution’s annual American History Essay Contest.
The contest is open to students in grades five through eight who attend public, private or parochial schools, as well as students enrolled in registered home-study programs.
The DAR established the contest to encourage young people to think creatively about the nation’s history and explore historical events from a different perspective.
This year’s topic focuses on the public reading of the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia on July 8, 1776.
Students are asked to imagine living in Philadelphia or another part of the colonies where news of independence did not arrive for several weeks. Essays should describe how they would react to hearing the Declaration read in their community, who they would share the news with, what actions they would take and how the announcement could affect their lives.
Essays will be judged on historical accuracy, adherence to the topic, organization, interest, originality, spelling, grammar, punctuation and neatness.
The Brunswick Town Chapter of the NSDAR is accepting essays from local students through Nov. 1, 2026.
Local winners will advance to the state level, where winning entries may then be selected for national recognition.

The Daughters of the American Revolution is a nonprofit, nonpolitical service organization founded in 1890 for women who can prove direct lineage from a Revolutionary War patriot. The organization focuses on patriotism, education and historic preservation.
The DAR has more than 185,000 members in about 3,000 chapters worldwide, including more than 100 chapters in North Carolina.
The Brunswick Town Chapter has more than 170 members. According to the chapter, several members descend from Revolutionary War patriots who lived in Brunswick County, and its membership represents descendants of more than 700 proven patriots from the original 13 colonies.
