Bumpy start to summer: Boat towing services see more distress calls

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Boat accidents are happening more often along our coast as we kick off the summer season. That’s at least what officials with two local boat towing services are saying.

WWAY reached out to Tow Boat USA Wrightsville Beach as well as Sea Tow Wrightsville Beach. Both say they generally see calls for service increase as summer starts. However, this year they say they are seeing more distress calls and calls involving crashes than in years past.

Despite the increase, they say they expect even more calls for help as the summer arrives.

“Probably two weeks before Mother’s Day and it hasn’t let off since,” Ryan Saportio, Sea Tow, said. “The main calls that we’re getting are just a lot of mechanical errors, fuel gauges not working properly, dead batteries early in the season. Recently we’ve seen a lot of boating accidents as well.”

“There’s been multiple incidents,” Brooks Bridges, Tow Boat US, said. “That’s one of the main things that we always stress is safety on the water. We want everybody to have fun, have a good time, enjoy themselves, but at the same time, make sure you’ve got all your safety equipment.”

Folks with Sea Tow say calls for help were up 15 percent and officials at Tow Boat US say they saw around a dozen more calls for service than they average entering the summer season.
