Business picks up for taxi companies after winter storm
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Travel headaches have been commonplace for people around southeastern North Carolina in the wake of our recent winter storm, but for the taxi companies in Wilmington, that’s been good for business.
The owner of MMM Coastal Taxi and Tidal Taxi in Wilmington, Jim Simpson, says he’s had to turn some customers away as people try to find alternate modes of transportation.
He thinks the increased demand is due to lack of public transportation options and the fear some people may have of driving on icy roads.
His company has had to work with a reduced staff because some of the drivers don’t feel comfortable with the driving conditions, but that hasn’t stopped people from requesting the company’s services.
“A lot of people’s batteries were dead. I’ve had several people call, wanting a boost. Lot of people are in a hurry and lock their keys in their car, we’ve done that, and we’ve done several taxi rides,” said Simpson.
Other taxi companies like Port City Taxi and Wilmington NC Taxi have also been busy, but have had to adjust their hours to avoid having their drivers on the road at night.
