Calabash art gallery showcases coastal beauty in ‘Wild Places’ exhibit
CALABASH, NC (WWAY) — A new art exhibit in Calabash will showcase the beauty of the Carolina coast while raising money to help protect it.
Sunset River Gallery will host “Wild Places,” a solo exhibition featuring oil paintings by Supply artist Gail Black. The exhibit opens with a reception on Saturday, September 19, from 2 to 4 p.m. and runs through October 24.
Black’s paintings highlight secluded marshes, ponds, waterways and coastal areas from southeastern North Carolina to South Carolina.
The artwork was inspired by photographs Black took while kayaking, hiking and exploring protected and at-risk natural areas from Pender County to Horry County, South Carolina.
The exhibit also has a conservation component.
Black plans to donate half of her proceeds from the show to the North Carolina Coastal Land Trust, which works to conserve coastal lands with scenic, recreational, historic and ecological value.
Gallery talk on coastal conservation
As part of the exhibit, Jesica Blake, associate director and incoming executive director of the North Carolina Coastal Land Trust, will speak at Sunset River Gallery on Thursday, September 24, at 1 p.m.
Blake will discuss protected areas along the North Carolina coast and ongoing efforts to preserve additional natural areas.
