Camp Lejeune to temporarily close Marines Road, Highway 172 Wednesday morning

JACKSONVILLE, NC (WWAY) — Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune will temporarily close Marines Road and Highway 172 from 5 to 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30, due to reduced visibility caused by smoke from smoldering fires within the G-10 impact area.

Smoke settling over portions of the installation during the early morning hours significantly reduces visibility along the roads, creating potentially hazardous driving conditions.

During the closure:

• Marines Road and Highway 172 will be closed to traffic from 5 to 10 a.m.
• Sneads Ferry Gate will be limited to personnel traveling to Courthouse Bay for work.
• Personnel who normally enter through Sneads Ferry Gate and use Marines Road to travel to Mainside should instead enter through Wilson Gate.
• Personnel traveling from Mainside to Courthouse Bay using Marines Road or Highway 172 will only be able to access Courthouse Bay through Sneads Ferry Gate.
• The Courthouse Bay Child Development Center and Medical Clinic will open at 10 a.m.

Motorists should plan for additional travel time and expect increased traffic and potential delays at alternate installation entry points, particularly Wilson Gate.

Officials are encouraging people who are sensitive to smoke to delay travel to affected areas until conditions improve.
