Cancelled flights ruin a Marine’s wedding day
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Thursday offered a bit of relief for travelers who have been stranded for days, but not for a Marine trying to get home to his bride to be.
“I was going home to get married to my fiancé,” said Marine Cpl. Jonathan Leon. “We’ve been together for four years. When we planned out the flight situation two months ago I never would have guessed that the flight today was going to get cancelled so I had to cancel my wedding. She was a little upset, to say the least.”
As Cpl. Leon desperately tried to get home to California for his big day flights were cancelled faster than the freezing rain and US Airways kept getting cold feet.
“I woke up at 4 A.M. and drove to Jacksonville, and that’s where everything started,” said Cpl. Leon. “I had three separate flights and then everything was cancelled so they said ‘hey, go to Wilmington’, so I drove to Wilmington, and the two flights going out tonight were also cancelled.”
With his wedding day ruined by the weather Cpl. Leon hopes to be home with his fiancé soon, and make it a Valentine’s Day she will never forget.
“They said tomorrow morning at nine but you hope for the best and expect the worst,” said Cpl. Leon. “She was very understanding and she gets that things happen, and she’ll have to wear her dress another day.”
Cpl. Leon says he has worked with commanders at Camp LeJeune who are going to give him a few extra days on his leave due to the circumstances.
