Cape Fear Community College hosts commencement ceremony

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A new chapter in life is beginning for more than 500 Cape Fear Community College Students. Friday, a commencement ceremony was held to celebrate their successes in the classroom.

And among those students who found success was Kristine Leanes. Leanes said after 16 years of marriage, 7 children and 5 deployments for her husband she decided it was time to go back to school in 2013.

“There were many times that I didn’t want to get up and go to school or I had to look at my homework and my children and choose and that’s really difficult,” said Leanes. “I think the most difficult part was when my sister passed away and it was when my husband was deployed and I had to go be with her and I just came home and I was just missing many pieces of my heart.”

Leanes said she is pursuing a career in occupational therapy.

Two commencement ceremonies were held in the Allan & Laura Wilson Humanities & Fine Arts Center in downtown Wilmington. The first ceremony was for students earning their high school diplomas from CFCC’s Adult High School and GED programs.

The second ceremony featured students earning associate degrees in arts and sciences and students graduating from CFCC’s technical and vocational programs with associate in applied sciences degrees, diplomas, and certificates.

After graduation, many of the students in the college transfer program will continue on to four-year universities such as UNC-Wilmington, UNC-Chapel Hill, East Carolina University, and many others. Vocational and technical graduates will head directly into the workforce in areas including health care, business, computer technology, marine technology, mechanical engineering, and a wide variety of trades.

“The graduating class is full of inspiring stories, from newlyweds graduating together, to students overcoming incredible obstacles to obtain their education,” said Dr. Amanda Lee, CFCC President. “I could not be more proud, and I look forward to celebrating their success at Commencement.
