WILMINGTON, N.C. (WWAY) — Cape Fear Community College (CFCC) has been nominated for a community award recognizing educational services in the Topsail area.

The college is among the nominees in the Favorite Educational Service category for Topsail’s Top Choice 2026 People’s Choice Awards.

The nomination comes as CFCC continues expanding educational and workforce training opportunities at its Alston W. Burke Center in Surf City.

The campus serves approximately 600 students each spring and fall semester.

In April 2026, CFCC opened a 10,500-square-foot addition to the facility, doubling its size and providing more space for university transfer courses, workforce training and community education programs.

The expansion includes new science and workforce development labs, allowing students to take courses such as General Biology and Anatomy and Physiology closer to home.

Students can also receive hands-on training and earn industry credentials in fields including heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) and marine engine technology.

Since opening in 2015, the Surf City campus has served students throughout Pender County and surrounding communities, including high school students, adult learners, veterans and military families.

Voting for Topsail’s Top Choice 2026 People’s Choice Awards is open through Oct. 31.

Community members can vote for CFCC in the Favorite Educational Service category.

More information about courses and programs offered at the Surf City campus is available on CFCC’s website.
