Cape Fear Habitat to host 9/11 Day of Service honoring veterans, first responders

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity is inviting the community to honor the sacrifices of military members and first responders by participating in its annual 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance this September.

The event, part of the organization’s ongoing Veterans Build initiative, will take place Friday, Sept. 11, at Cape Fear Habitat’s Haven Place development on Castle Hayne Road, adjacent to 3101 Castle Hayne Road.

The day will begin with a volunteer service project from 8 a.m. to noon, followed by a 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony from noon to 12:30 p.m. Organizers say the ceremony is open to the public and will include a moment of reflection and the playing of Taps in honor of those who lost their lives in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, as well as those who have served since.

“This event is a great way for local veterans and first responders to spend time reflecting on their service and the service of others,” said Rich Duncan, Cape Fear Habitat’s director of development. “September 11th is a time of remembrance, and at Cape Fear Habitat, we respect the sacrifices of the men and women who fight for and serve our country.”

Volunteers are encouraged to register in advance to participate in the morning service project. Organizers say a limited number of commemorative gifts will be available for attendees.

Cape Fear Habitat is also seeking event sponsors, with proceeds supporting the nonprofit’s Veterans Build program, which provides affordable home repairs for local veterans.
