WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Cape Fear Literacy Council held its largest annual fundraiser Tuesday, bringing the community together to support its adult education programs.

Hundreds of supporters attended the organization’s annual Luncheon for Literacy at Northside Church in Wilmington. The nonprofit provides free adult education services, including literacy instruction, English as a Second Language, and digital skills training, helping adults earn their GEDs, become U.S. citizens, and strengthen reading and math abilities.

The event also featured student speakers who shared how the council’s programs have impacted their lives.

Executive Director Yasmin Tomkinson said the strong turnout reflected the community’s commitment to the organization’s mission.

“It is the most humbling, gratifying thing in the world to know how much people care about this important mission, and we’re so grateful. In other places, literacy councils are shutting down, and we, by contrast, are really thriving and we’re very, very fortunate to be in a place where that is possible,” said Tomkinson.

The Cape Fear Literacy Council has more events planned, including a book sale scheduled for May 6 at Hi-Wire Brewing. More information can be found on the organization’s website: https://www.cfliteracy.org/book-sales/
