WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Cape Fear Literacy Council is set to bring together community members, supporters, and learners for its annual Luncheon for Literacy, an event focused this year on sustainability and the lasting impact of adult education.

The luncheon will take place Tuesday, April 21, 2026, at Northside Church, with doors opening at 11 a.m. for networking followed by a buffet lunch. The event will feature testimonials from students, volunteers, and staff, highlighting the transformative role literacy programs play across the Cape Fear region.

Founded in 1985, the Cape Fear Literacy Council provides free literacy, language, and computer skills programs to adults, helping individuals gain the tools needed for employment, education, and daily life. Organizers say the luncheon is both a celebration of those successes and a call to action to sustain and expand access to these services.

According to the organization, more than 93,000 adults in the Cape Fear region lack sufficient literacy skills, underscoring a significant need for continued support. Over the past year alone, the council has served nearly 600 adult learners with the help of trained volunteers.

Regular tickets for the luncheon have already sold out, though organizers encourage interested attendees to join a waitlist through the event registration page.

Proceeds from the event will go toward ensuring the organization’s programs remain free and accessible, continuing its decades-long mission to support adult learners and strengthen the local community.
