Cape Fear region, and NC, cash in on tourists
WILMINGTON, NC (StarNews) — Tourists didn’t skimp on cracking open their wallets on recent trips to North Carolina.
All 100 of the state’s counties saw growth in their tourism spending in 2017 — an upward trend that proved especially sweet for local counties, according to a new report from the N.C. Department of Commerce.
New Hanover County registered its seventh consecutive record-breaking year for tourism spending with $578.2 million, a 4.32-percent hike over 2016 figures. It was the eighth highest-earning county in the state.
“When tourism revenues are up it not only means more jobs and a better quality of life for our local citizens, it also means more money to fund beach renourishment, the Wilmington Convention Center and other tourism-related projects,” Kim Hufham, President/CEO of the New Hanover County Tourism Development Authority, said in a release.
