Cape Fear River Watch to hold Halloween-themed Burnt Mill Creek cleanup

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Cape Fear River Watch is putting a Halloween twist on its monthly cleanup as volunteers work to remove litter from the Burnt Mill Creek watershed this weekend.
The organization’s October Second Saturday Cleanup will take place Saturday, Oct. 10, from 9 to 11 a.m.
Volunteers will focus on three areas: a drainage easement behind the Crossroads shopping plaza, the continuation of the easement behind Jackson’s BBQ and the artificial wetland along Kerr Avenue.
Participants will meet at a staging area in the Crossroads Center parking lot at 894-1 S. Kerr Ave.
Cape Fear River Watch and Keep New Hanover Beautiful will provide gloves, litter pickers, bags and safety vests. Organizers are encouraging volunteers to wear Halloween costumes.
Volunteers who have waterproof knee boots or waders are also encouraged to bring them. Organizers say some volunteers will be needed to walk through portions of the drainage area where standing water is typically present.
The volunteer with what organizers describe as the “trashiest” cleanup costume will receive a voucher for a paddle boat ride at Greenfield Lake.
The cleanup is part of Cape Fear River Watch’s Second Saturday Cleanup program.
Registration is open ahead of Saturday’s event.
