Carolina Beach and Topsail Island named among Southern Living’s ultimate beach towns

TOPSAIL ISLAND, NC (WWAY) — Two local coastal destinations in southeastern North Carolina are receiving national recognition after being featured in Southern Living’s list of the “10 Beach Towns That Feel Like a Dream Summer Escape.”
Published in the magazine’s May 2026 issue, the list spotlights beach communities across the South that offer a blend of natural beauty, local attractions, and small-town charm. Among the destinations earning a spot are Carolina Beach and Topsail Island, home to the communities of Topsail Beach, Surf City, and North Topsail Beach.
Southern Living praised Carolina Beach for its historic boardwalk, a longtime destination featuring restaurants, shops, arcades, and family-friendly attractions. The publication also highlighted the town’s famous Britts Donuts, which has been serving fresh-made donuts since 1939, and nearby Carolina Beach State Park, where visitors can hike trails and see the rare native Venus flytrap.
The magazine also recognized Topsail Island for its laid-back atmosphere, preserved coastline, and commitment to protecting its natural environment. The 26-mile barrier island is known for its uncrowded beaches and sea turtle conservation efforts, including the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center in Surf City. Each summer, loggerhead sea turtles return to the island’s beaches to nest, drawing visitors interested in wildlife and coastal conservation.
The list showcases beach towns that offer more than just a place to swim as it highlights destinations known for their local culture, outdoor recreation, dining, festivals, and unique coastal experiences.
Carolina Beach and Topsail Island joined destinations from Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Texas, Virginia, and Delaware on this year’s list, underscoring North Carolina’s reputation as home to some of the South’s most beloved beach communities.
For residents, the recognition reinforces what many locals already know—that southeastern North Carolina’s coast continues to attract visitors looking for a classic beach vacation with welcoming communities, scenic shorelines, and plenty to explore both on and off the sand.
