Carolina Beach receives $3.5 million grant for planned oceanfront park

CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Carolina Beach is moving forward with plans for a new oceanfront park near the boardwalk after receiving a provisional $3.5 million grant from the New Hanover Community Endowment.
The grant will fund the first phase of the Carolina Beach Coastal Park and Event Stage, including design, landscaping and a new stage.
The town recently spent $12 million to purchase nine properties in the boardwalk district. Five of those properties are expected to become part of the future park.
Carolina Beach Mayor Lynn Barbee said the long-term project is expected to cost more than $20 million over five years. Preliminary ideas include a large open lawn, splash pad and improvements to pedestrian and accessibility pathways.
The project has raised concerns from some residents about potential flooding and environmental impacts.
One resident, who asked to remain anonymous, said he supports the potential economic benefits but wants additional protective measures considered because of existing flood concerns in the area.
Barbee said stormwater improvements will be incorporated as the park is designed.
“Once the park is designed, there will be obviously stormwater improvements in that area,” Barbee said.
The town also plans to address electrical upgrades and lighting as part of the project.
Barbee said the town will try to complete as much work as possible during the winter months to limit disruptions as plans move forward next year.
