“Carolina Hurricanes” watch party raises funds for a good cause
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY)– While the “Carolina Hurricanes” celebrated their play-off win against the “Ottawa Senators”, there was a crowd supporting them here in the Port City.
In Riverfront Park, in Downtown Wilmington, hundreds sat around a giant screen to watch the Hurricanes go up against the Senators in an important play-off round. People enjoyed music, food, games, and hockey of course.
The event was free, but people could shop at local vendors to help support local businesses and help the Wilmington Arena Project, a plan to build a multi-use arena in Wilmington.
The founder of the non-profit, Michael Vollmin says that’s the end goal, but for the meantime, they will do small things to impact the community.
“The funds raised through this event are going towards a small mobile pop-up activation hockey rink,” said Vollmin. “Its four hockey boards, with youth plastic sticks, that we will bring around to school.”
Vollmin also announced the Cape Fear Sports and Community Coalition Kickoff, hoping to bring the community for more engaging activities.
