Carolina Shores looks to grow through annexation
BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Carolina Shores may undergo some changes in the next year. The primarily residential town is considering the possibility of annexation.
Annexing would create a new partnership with Carolina Shores North.
The city will ask the General Assembly for permission to hold a referendum in November during the next election cycle to allow the residents who would be impacted to vote accordingly, and the next steps would be taken next year depending on the outcome.
Some new services would be provided for the residents such as street resurfacing and street light additions.
Town Administrator Jon Mendenhall explains that other than a small tax burden increase, the change could be very beneficial for the residents.
“They’re in unincorporated Brunswick County now,” Mendenhall said. “Their county status wouldn’t really change. They would achieve more representation closer to home. You wouldn’t be going to Bolivia to talk to your elected officials. You’d be coming a mile down the street.”
The decision would be made ultimately in November during a referendum election.
