Cars by Johnson, Gordon fail inspection

SONOMA, Calif. (AP) — The cars driven by Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson failed initial inspection and won't be allowed to practice or qualify today for the NASCAR Nextel Cup race at Infineon Raceway.

NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston says the two Chevrolets had modifications to the front fenders which were found to be outside what NASCAR allows.

No further penalties or suspensions were announced, and Poston says the teams would be allowed to repair their cars and try to get them through inspection.

Since they will not be allowed to qualify, both cars would have to start from the rear of the 43-car field in Sunday's Toyota/Save Mart 350 if they do pass another inspection.
