WHITEVILLE, NC (WWAY) — A traffic stop in Whiteville led to an arrest and the discovery of suspected methamphetamine, according to the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies initiated a traffic stop on May 25 after observing a vehicle traveling left of center on Washington Street before turning onto Legion Drive, according to the sheriff’s office.

As a deputy approached the vehicle, investigators said they detected the odor of marijuana coming from inside.

The driver was identified as Jonathan Kellihan. Deputies said Kellihan and his female passenger were asked to exit the vehicle while the investigation continued.

According to the sheriff’s office, deputies later learned Kellihan had an outstanding warrant for his arrest. He was taken into custody and transported to the Columbus County Detention Center.

During a search of the vehicle, deputies said they found a one-dollar bill containing a crystal-like substance inside a purse on the passenger-side floorboard.

Investigators said the female passenger told deputies the substance was not fentanyl and said the only drug that may have been inside the vehicle was “ice,” a common street term for methamphetamine. The substance was field-tested and produced a positive result, according to investigators.

The sheriff’s office said evidence collected during the investigation was processed and secured. Warrants were later obtained for the female passenger. Authorities said the investigation remains active.
