Celebrating the completion of the Wilmington Riverwalk

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — On Tuesday, we gave you the good news that the Downtown Wilmington Riverwalk had finally been completed.

This weekend, members of the community gathered at Riverfront Park for a celebration more than thirty years in the making.

Mayor Bill Saffo gave remarks about the completion of the project.

Representatives from Wilmington Downtown Incorporated and the New Hanover County Tourism Development Authority were also on hand for the ceremony.

The 1.75 mile Riverwalk stretches from the Isabel Holmes Bridge on the north side to the foot of Nun Street to the south.

More than $30 million has been invested by the City of Wilmington into the Riverwalk since 1980.

“Here we are today, in 2017, declaring that we have built this great Riverwalk for our community and that generation upon generation are gonna experience and love it as we all do today,” said Mayor Saffo.

After the ceremony, people were invited on guided tours of the Riverwalk.

There were also open houses at the Wilmington Convention Center and Chamber of Commerce.
