CFCC gallery, Cameron Art Museum partner on ‘Sense of Place’ exhibition

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Wilma W. Daniels Gallery at Cape Fear Community College and Cameron Art Museum are partnering to present a new exhibition highlighting artists who have shaped the visual identity of southeastern North Carolina.

“Sense of Place” opens Aug. 11 and will remain on display through Oct. 9 at the Wilma W. Daniels Gallery on CFCC’s downtown Wilmington campus.

The exhibition features works from Cameron Art Museum’s permanent collection and is curated by Ben Billingsley, the museum’s curator of exhibitions and collections.

According to organizers, the exhibition includes artwork by Wilmington-area artists spanning multiple generations, from historical figures such as Elisabeth Chant and Claude Howell to contemporary artists associated with ACME Studio and Gallery, including Pam Toll and Dick Roberts.

Organizers said the exhibition explores the relationship between art, landscape and community in the Cape Fear region while also introducing students to the area’s artistic heritage.

“We are excited to bring this exhibition to the Wilmington community and our CFCC students,” Skye Dlugy-Hegwer, CFCC’s visual art studio technician, said in a news release. “Through this collaboration, students are invited not only to learn about the region’s rich artistic roots, but to see themselves as part of its present and its future.”

A public reception is scheduled during Fourth Friday Gallery Nights on Aug. 28 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Wilma W. Daniels Gallery. The event is free and open to the public.
