WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Residents near Cape Fear Community College’s North Campus may hear loud explosions this weekend as part of a scheduled public safety training exercise.

CFCC’s Public Safety College will conduct its Explosives, Bombing and Terrorism course Saturday, Oct. 10, and Sunday, Oct. 11.

The training will be led by CFCC instructors with backgrounds in the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and attended by public safety professionals.

According to the college, controlled training explosives will be detonated behind the Safety Training Center, also known as the NC Building, on North Campus.

The sound of the explosions may be noticeable in surrounding neighborhoods.

The course is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday.

Weather permitting, the controlled detonations are expected to take place after 3 p.m. Saturday and between 10 a.m. and noon Sunday.

CFCC emphasized that the explosions are part of a planned training exercise and are not associated with an emergency or public safety threat.

The college is notifying nearby residents in advance so they are aware of the expected noise.
