CFCC’s R/V Cape Hatteras to become artificial reef off Wrightsville Beach

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Cape Fear Community College plans to donate its longtime research vessel, the R/V Cape Hatteras, to the North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries for use as an artificial reef.
The vessel is currently on its final student training voyage and is expected to return Sunday, Oct. 25.
CFCC says the Cape Hatteras will leave the college’s dock for the final time Tuesday, Oct. 27, as preparations begin for its next use.
The college purchased the vessel in 2013, and it has served as a floating classroom for students in CFCC’s Marine Technology program.
Plans call for the vessel to be sunk about 18 miles off Wrightsville Beach, where it would provide habitat for marine life and a site for recreational fishing and diving.
Preparation is expected to take three to four months and will include work needed to meet environmental requirements for use as an artificial reef. Deployment is tentatively planned for the spring.
CFCC Marine Technology Program Director Shawna Rowe said the vessel has played a major role in students’ offshore training and that the transition will allow it to continue serving a purpose after its time with the college.
The CFCC Foundation also plans to offer alumni, former crew members and the public an opportunity to honor someone with a tribute aboard the vessel. Additional details are expected later.
A new 86-foot catamaran is currently being built for CFCC and is expected to arrive this winter.
