Challenge to book in Brunswick County Schools ends

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Brunswick County School Board members made a decision on a book’s future in schools Tuesday night.

Members decided “The Absolutely True Diary of A Part-Time Indian” will stay in schools. But a student must have a parent’s permission to check the book out of the library.

A district spokeswoman says Frances Wood of Ash formally appealed to the school board after the Superintendent and a Cedar Grove Middle School Committee denied her request to ban the book.

Supporters say the book is acclaimed as an accurate depiction of bullying and racism, but Wood
said the book is not morally acceptable and inappropriate for 8th grade students.
