Chief: Gangs to blame for rash of shootings

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A Wilmington teen is facing attempted murder and assault charges after police say he shot another teen several times Sunday, leaving him in serious condition.

Wilmington Police say the shooting happened at 414 Henry Street just after 1:30 p.m. That’s where they say Barry Dianell Pierce, 18, shot Keandre Tilgman, 16, of Wilmington, multiple times just outside a home.

Police say they found Tilgman inside the kitchen area of the home, after officers say he told them Pierce ran up on him and started shooting. They say Tilgman told officers he was shot several times while he was trying to run back into the house.

Officers say EMS took Tilgman to the hospital to be treated for serious injuries.

Chief Ralph Evangelous says gangs are to blame for this shooting and other incidents from this weekend. He calls the incidents retaliatory shootings.

“This violence cannot continue to go on,” Evangelous said. “It’s accepted in the community. They’re not cooperating with us, and we will make every effort and place every amount of resource we have to put these people in jail. They’re dangerous. They’re criminals, and they need to be off the street.”

Evangelous says the community needs to trust police and help them do their jobs.
