UPDATE: Victims identified in car crash that killed child


WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Highway Patrol released the names of the people involved in a deadly car crash on River Road Sunday morning.

Trooper B.R. Phillips said the crash happened on River Road at 9:30 a.m. Sunday. He said an SUV was traveling east on River Road. He said the vehicle approached a left hand curve, traveled off the road and hit a tree.

Phillips said Melissa Henderson, 29, of Wilmington was the driver of the vehicle and mother to the two passengers. Henderson was transported to New Hanover Regional Medical Center and then to UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.

Henderson’s 13-month-old, James Andrews III,  was seated behind the driver seat and did not survive the collision.  He was buckled in a child restraint.

The Trooper said Henderson’s two and a half year old, Jacquelyn Andrews, was seated in the right rear seat and was buckled in a child restraint.  He said Jacquelyn was transported to NHRMC.

This collision is still under investigation by the State Highway Patrol and you will be notified of any criminal charges that may arise.

District Attorney Ben David said the Sheriff’s Office and Highway Patrol are investigating and treating this as a criminal investigation. He added that information regarding the make and model of the car will be released soon in hopes that witnesses will have more information.
