Child finds gun in Wilmington park

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A child playing in a Wilmington park yesterday afternoon found a gun on the playground.

Wilmington Police say the boy was on the playground at Portia Mills Hines Park at N. 10th and Rankin streets around 1 p.m. when he found a handgun under the stairs. Police say the child went to his grandmother and told her, and she called 911.

“That just goes to show you what’s out there,” WPD spokeswoman Linda Rawley said. “Certainly glad that this lady was able to collect it and that this child was not hurt.”

Police responded to the scene and took the gun. They ran its serial number through a national law enforcement database, but Rawley said they did not get any hits on it, and it has not been reported stolen.
