Toddler killed in accident, driver charged with DWI
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A car accident at the intersection of Oleander Drive and Independence Boulevard has killed 2-year-old Mason Richardson.
Wilmington police say Jonathan Alexander Hayes, 24, rear-ended a car carrying four people, including the child. All four were taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center. Police say Hayes did not immediately stop.
Police say Hayes then sideswiped another truck and then came to a stop further down the road on Independence. He is charged with DWI, felony death by motor vehicle, reckless operation of a vehicle, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
“I mean this is the most heart breaking outcome of driving while impaired,” Wilmington Police spokeswoman Cathryn Lindsay said. “It’s a real danger to the citizens here. Obviously, everybody knows not to do it, but here’s a result of what could happen when you drive while you’re impaired.”
Police said the fire department and EMS each had to give Hayes Narcan at the scene.
