Child support amnesty event in New Hanover delayed

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A child support amnesty event scheduled for this week in New Hanover County has been postponed.

The New Hanover Child Support Agency announced Tuesday that the Child Support Amnesty Days originally planned for Aug. 13-15 will no longer take place as scheduled.

Officials said the event is being postponed due to “unforeseen concerns.”

“The New Hanover Child Support Agency apologizes for any inconveniences this may cause and hope to reschedule this event in the near future,” the agency said in a statement.

The three-day event was intended to give parents with active arrest orders related to child support cases an opportunity to address their cases without being arrested while attending.

Under the original plan, eligible parents could have an order for arrest recalled by making one month’s child support payment or paying $300, whichever amount was greater. Representatives from the Supporting, Training, and Employing Parents (STEP) Program were also expected to provide assistance with employment resources and payment barriers.

No new date for the amnesty event has been announced.
