Children of all ages say “Read to Me”

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Thousands of children from around the Cape Fear now have books of their very own thanks to the Junior League and Children’s Museum of Wilmington.

Saturday’s Read to Me Festival was free for everyone… kids got to hear stories, play games, do arts and crafts and see a magic show all about literacy.

Co-chair of the event, Emily Hammatt said reading is an important skill for all ages. Whether reading for fun or for school, filling out a job application or reading the newspaper, learning to read at young age is important. “TV can take the place of a lot of books nowadays, and computers and technology. Literacy has been around forever, and it is going to be around forever, and these children need to know how important books are, how important they have been and how important they’re going to be to them in the future for learning and just being a member of society.”

Each child got to pick a free book to take home with them. The 6th annual festival saw thousands of eager readers in just hours.
