City leaders read by example
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Students at Alderman Elementary School in Wilmington got a special treat today.
Volunteers including Wilmington’s police chief, fire chief and mayor came out today to meet, greet and read with the kids.
Chrissy and Jonathan Edwards organized the event in honor of Dr. Seuss’s birthday. The PTA members said they wanted to get the students excited about reading and wanted to help organize an event that could benefit the students as much as possible.
“It’s really important for kids to see public officials out, reading and to know that reading is very important, and it gives them a sense of, you know, he’s doing it, well maybe I should start,” Jonathan Edwards said. “It’s a proven fact kids that read on a higher level have better SAT scores, so in the long run, it really is for the kids.”
The Edwardses made all of the phone calls, and everyone was more than happy to participate this week for Read Across America.
