Communities in Schools searching for volunteers as school starts

SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) – As students gear up to return to school, one organization in Brunswick County is gearing up to recruit more volunteers.

Communities in Schools says the start of the school year means they have an increase in volunteer needs.  The organization depends on community members to mentor students who need a helping hand. CIS says mentoring, which requires minimal time commitments from the volunteer, is an often critical resource that enables students to keep pace for the school year; frequently the relationships created between mentors and students has attributed to successes that otherwise would never have been possible.

Volunteer mentoring begins in August with efforts to collect school supplies for students in need, and continues through the end of the school year, taking many forms along the way as the school year becomes more involved.

Mentors are encouraged to check in regularly to see where they can help.
