Community celebrates World Refugee Day

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Wilmington community celebrated World Refugee Day with a festival Saturday.

Live performances, food, music and a soccer tournament brought together our city’s refugee population with the rest of the community. Visitors got a chance to learn about different countries like Burma, Colombia, Cuba and Iraq. Coordinator Sara Pascal said it’s beneficial to the entire community.

“Just to get to know each other, to share cultures, to learn from each other and to have a fun time,” Pascal said. “This is their new home and we don’t want it to be the refugee community separated from the broader community.”

World Refugee Day is recognized on June 20.
