Community Justice Center seeks Wilmington funding as Endowment grant expires
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Community Justice Center is seeking financial support from the City of Wilmington as a major grant that helped launch the organization approaches its expiration date.
During Tuesday night’s Wilmington City Council meeting, Community Justice Center CEO Ben David asked the city to provide $100,000 in funding to help sustain the organization after its $5 million grant from the New Hanover Community Endowment expires Dec. 31.
David said the Community Justice Center has already received financial support from New Hanover County and the state. He told council the city’s contribution would help bridge the gap as the endowment funding comes to an end.
“Put your money where your mouth is and fund the CJC. I’ve never asked the city for money before this year, and the reason I’m asking for it for this year is because it goes into next year when the funding that we’ve had from the New Hanover County Community Endowment runs out Dec. 31,” David said.
New Hanover County has committed $300,000 to help cover the organization’s operating costs and lease expenses.
City officials said once Wilmington City Council receives a formal written funding request, council members will draft a resolution for consideration and a vote.
