Complaints filed against nonprofit operations involving Pender County Commissioner Jimmy Tate
PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A pair of Pender County citizens are asking for a state review of two operations run by Pender County Commissioner Jimmy Tate.
The Pender-Topsail Post & Voice is reporting Republican leader Phil Cordeiro and Kim McGahey filed misconduct complaints against Tate’s Mt. Calvary Center for Leadership Development.
The allegations involve the center’s nonprofit operations, Medicaid reimbursement practices, executive compensation, grant administration and political activity.
The complainants are also asking for operational details on Tate Farm by the Pond which hosts numerous community events.
The Pender-Topsail Post & Voice said the North Carolina Attorney General’s Office has asked Mt. Calvary Center for Leadership Development for a response within 15 days.
In a statement to WWAY, Tate said, “In my opinion, this is a personal and politically motivated vendetta by individuals who blame me for losing the election and are willing to do anything to hinder the important work that Mt. Calvary Center does every day serving our communities.”
Attorney Ken Thompson, Mt. Calvary Center for Leadership Development’s General Counsel, also provided a statement.
“Mt. Calvary Center for Leadership Development received a copy of a citizen’s complaint that was submitted to the North Carolina Department of Justice,” Thompson said. “The allegations in the complaint are false, and they are easily dismissed. A response was requested, and a response will be provided. Mt. Calvary looks forward to continuing its positive work serving our community and will not be distracted by politically motivated and meritless allegations.”
