Long-term construction project planned for Isabel Holmes Bridge

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Work to refurbish the Isabel Holmes bridge could last for more than a year.

The NC Department of Transportation says the $17.9 million preservation project will include the removal and replacement of the grid deck, as well as repairs of the concrete deck and riding surface of the bridge.

The project area will be just under a half of a mile long.

A Raleigh company was awarded the construction contract. Work can begin as early as April, with the project completion date set for late 2020.

WWAY reached out to the NCDOT to find out how this will impact traffic, but those details are not yet available.

This is one of 21 highway and bridge projects awarded recently by the NCDOT. Per state law they went to the lowest bidder among qualified contractors. They are worth $331.5 million, more than $57 million under engineer estimates.
