Cutter Diligence returns home, marks last mission for commander

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — It was a night of celebration on Wilmington’s riverfront. The Coast Guard Cutter Diligence returned to its homeport after a 43-day patrol on the Atlantic Ocean.

While at sea, the Cutter Diligence embarked 65 migrants after they tried to illegally reach the U.S. and support a long-range medevac of a sick mariner.

Brittney Curtis couldn’t wait to embrace her husband, Aaron.

“We’re just excited to tell him about different things that have happened while he was gone,” Curtis said. “We’ll probably say, ‘I love you and we missed you.’”

This is the last mission Douglas Goodwin will serve as Commander of the Cutter Diligence. He will turn over command of the ship in a ceremony next month.
